Question 2 of 9: If the main reason for intensive rehab is because the resident is debilitated from being ill can I use the rehab treatment code that maps from CMS as the primary in I0020B?

The Harmony HealthCARE Specialist recommends that the Rehabilitation treatment codes should not be coded in 10020B if they are symptoms codes, return to provider codes and do not represent the primary reason for the SNF stay.  However, they do support the need for therapy and should be reported in other areas of the MDS.

Question 1 of 9: Should the NTA diagnosis be listed on the UB?

Harmony Healthcare International (HHI) recommends that all active NTA diagnoses be included and properly sequenced on the UB-04 for the time period covered by the claim.  For MDS purposes, an active diagnosis is defined as one that has a direct relationship to the patient's functional status, cognitive status, mood and behavior status, nurse monitoring, medical treatment or risk of death.

Interview with Tony Marshall, President of the Georgia Health Care Facility GHCA

Kris Mastrangelo, President and CEO at Harmony Healthcare International (HHI), interviews Tony Marshall, President of the Georgia Health Care Association (GHCA), in the AHCA Provider Lounge.  Tony discusses everything from the PDPM transition to workforce challenges facing Georgia health care providers.   Voted one of the best places to do business, Georgia faces a unique challenge when it comes to long-term care staffing.  With businesses constantly creating new jobs that offer higher paying wages and easier workloads it's often hard for long-term care providers to compete for new staff, especially at the CNA level.  In order to help providers secure staff, Georgia Health Care Association has paired up with several career academies in hopes of promoting long-term care professions to a younger audience.

Interview with Betsy Johnson, President of the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities

Kris Mastrangelo, President and CEO at Harmony Healthcare International (HHI), interviews Betsy Johnson, President of the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities (KAHCF), in the AHCA Provider Lounge.   Betsy Johnson discusses the current challenges facing long-term care facilities and professionals in the state of Kentucky.  First off, with a very low unemployment rate, Kentucky has a limited number of individuals looking for new jobs, let alone jobs in the long-term care industry.  With that in mind, KAHCF has joined forces with both the Kentucky Chamber and the Cabinet of Health and Family Services to promote jobs within the long-term care field.  As part of their partnership with the Cabinet of Health and Family Services, KAHCF encourages young adults who are aging out of the foster care system to look into careers within the field of aging.  The Cabinet in turn pays the salaries of any individuals taking advantage of this program.  Johnson is quick to remind the viewer that many of today's long-term care industry leaders were once CNAs who themselves started in the field when they were eighteen years-old.  Additionally, Johnson discusses the lack of tort reform in the state of Kentucky and the effect that has on the state's long-term care facilities.

Interview with Heath Boddy, Executive Director of the Nebraska Health Care Association

Kris Mastrangelo, President and CEO at Harmony Healthcare International (HHI), interviews Heath Boddy, Executive Director of the Nebraska Health Care Association, in the AHCA Provider Lounge.   Heath discusses the pros and cons of the Five-Star Rating.  While Heath believes transparency is a good thing, he finds the rating system to be flawed in several aspects.  First off, the Five-Star Rating is on a bell-curve that requires at least 10% of the providers in a state to be one-star.  By this measure, regardless of the level of care provided all facilities in a state will never all be four or five stars.  Additionally, Five-Star Ratings are state specific.  A Five-Star facility in Nebraska may not be comparable to a Five-Star facility in Iowa or vice-versa.
