therapy.jpgQuestion:  Does the therapist need to treat the day of discharge in order to qualify for the short stay?

Answer:  No, the therapist does not need to treat the day of discharge.  Points to know:

  • Therapy is "ongoing", meaning the treatment sessions would have continued if the patient was not discharged.

For example, a patient is discharged on day 3 at 7 a.m. and therapy is not yet discontinued. Dash fill the end of therapy date to show therapy was ongoing when this happened.
  • The assessment will lead to a Non-Rehabilitation RUG Level if the assessment lacks sufficient therapy. Average the minutes to calculate the Rehabilitation RUG Level or if Non-Rehabilitation RUG Level is higher.
  • A2400C end of Medicare date cannot be dash filled.
  • A2300 must equal A2400C.
  • Be sure all 8 criteria are met:
    1. The resident must be discharged before day 8 of the Medicare Stay.
    2. The assessment must be coded as a Start of Therapy (SOT) OMRA.
    3. A PPS 5-day or re-admission return assessment must be complete (may be combined).
    4. Therapy started within the last 4 days of the Medicare Part A covered stay including weekends.
    5. At least one therapy discipline continued (be active) through the last day of the Medicare covered stay.
    6. The ARD must be on or before the 8th day of the Medicare Part A covered stay.
    7. The ARD of the SOT OMRA must be the date of discharge from the facility.
    8. The RUG group assigned to the Start of Therapy OMRA must be a Rehabilitation Plus Extensive Services or a Rehabilitation group.
