Adverse Events Focused Survey

Adverse Events in the Post-Acute setting directly impact the quality of care rendered. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) reported that one in three skilled nursing facility (SNF) beneficiaries were injured by an adverse event or temporary harm event within the first 35 days of their skilled stay. In addition, the OIG determined that nearly 60 percent of those events were preventable.

Preventable adverse events are generally caused by:

  • Events related to Medication (Opiates, Psychotropics, Anti-Diabetics, Anticoagulants, Diuretic, Antibiotics and Cardiac/Blood pressure medication)
  • Events Related to Resident Care (Falls, Inadequate Fluid Maintenance, Respiratory distress/infection, Exacerbations of preexisting conditions, feeding tube complications, in-house acquired/worsened Pressure ulcers, Elopement and Infections
  • Events related to care plan development, implementation and communication
  • Preventing and managing Adverse Events is critical to providing Quality Care, Successful Survey Outcomes and Accurate and Appropriate reimbursement under CMS Quality Initiatives
