Initially providing direct care as an Occupational Therapist, Kris became familiar with the Medicare, Medicaid, and multiple other reimbursement systems.

Joyce has extensive knowledge in reimbursement and management of patient care.

Kathy has extensive experience in providing an analysis of the Medicare Part A services for MDS and Billing errors and compliance issues and facilitates appropriate corrections and rebilling. Kathy provides education for nursing facility staff that is directed from the Medicare Benefit Policy Manual, the Medicare Claims Processing Manual, the State Operations Manual, and the Resident Assessment Instrument Manual that is pertinent to area of focus.

She also has extensive experience with the MDS process, both in performing assessments and in guiding other MDS coordinators in learning and mastering this complex process.

Kathy graduated from Worcester State University with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy. She has over 25 years in the healthcare industry, including over 15 years as an occupational therapist and rehabilitation director in the nursing home industry. A dementia specialist, she has published and presented on strategies for therapists and nursing home staff who work with this challenging patient population.

Primarily working as a Rehabilitation Director for 20 plus years in Long-Term Care Skilled Nursing with direct oversight for Occupational, Physical, Speech, and Recreational therapy staff. As a Rehabilitation Director, she developed expertise in program growth, rehabilitation regulatory compliance, and staff development. Donna is responsible for creating ongoing opportunities for educational growth for clinicians including ensuring maximizing clinical care and patient outcomes. Deb Lee holds a Bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College and completed her graduate program in Occupational Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania prior to working in both acute and post-acute care. She has over 40 years clinical, consulting, and corporate work experience, has written articles for professional publications, been a guest lecturer for college therapy programs, and served on the Executive Boards for two state OT associations. Her corporate career as the Medicare Resource expert for 280 senior communities and as a Divisional Director for MDS included extensive speaking and Medicare training of management teams nationally, analysis of data, and program development. Her role in opening new skilled nursing facilities and clinics, implementation of an electronic health record, responsibility for external therapy contractors, for appeals and all ALJ hearings plus collaboration on a successful CMS settlement provided broad experience in senior care. With expertise and certification in compliance (CHC), case management, and quality assurance, Deb continues her interest in supporting SNFs and promoting quality care while navigating the rapidly changing regulatory environment.

Pam Duchene has over 35 years of experience in the healthcare industry spanning the Acute and Post-Acute Care Setting including 25 years in the Chief Nursing Officer role within acute care systems, holding positions of leadership of inpatient and outpatient nursing centers, rehabilitation, ambulance services, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory services, as well as occupational health services.

Pam continues clinical practice as a geriatric nurse practitioner. She has published and presented nationally on nursing leadership, recruitment, shared governance, pain, and rehabilitation.

Pam received a PhD in nursing from Rush University (Chicago), and a nurse practitioner post-graduate degree from the University of Massachusetts/Boston. Pam maintains certifications in NEA, Pain Management, FACHE, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Pam is an adjunct professor at Regis college, her Alma Mater.

The Center is a national nonprofit organization that provides education and legal assistance to help elders and people with disabilities obtain fair access to Medicare and necessary health care. Ms. Bers assists with the Center’s federal litigation. She has worked recently on class action lawsuits addressing Medicare access for medically necessary care, including the successful “improvement standard” lawsuit (the JIMMO case) and “observation status.”

Ms. Bers has worked as an elder law attorney in private practice, and she was a staff attorney at the Springfield office of Western Massachusetts Legal Services (now Community Legal Aid). At Legal Services, Ms. Bers handled public benefits cases and represented Medicare beneficiaries as part of the Massachusetts Medicare Advocacy Project. Ms. Bers has worked closely with community and social service agencies, such as Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders (SHINE) and local Councils on Aging. She has written articles and conducted presentations and trainings on Medicare topics. She was a law clerk to the Honorable Robert N. Chatigny of the U.S. District Court, District of Connecticut. She is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and serves on the Board of Directors of Square One, a non-profit provider of early education and childcare for families in the Springfield, Massachusetts area. She graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School.
