The Nursing Home Compare Quality Five-Star Rating System Updates January 2023:
2023 Updates Five Star Overall Quality Rating
- Adjusting Quality Measure Ratings Based on Erroneous Schizophrenia CodingEffective with the January 2023 refresh, CMS will be conducting audits of Schizophrenia Coding within the Minimum Data Set (MDS) Data. Facilities identified with coding inaccuracies (recognized through the Schizophrenia MDS audit) will incur the below Adjustments to Quality Measure (QM) Ratings:
o The Overall Quality Measure and Long-Stay Quality Measure Ratings will be downgraded to one star for six months. This drops the facility’s Overall Star Rating by one star.
o The Short-Stay Quality Measure rating will be suppressed for six months.
o The Long-Stay Antipsychotic Quality Measure will be suppressed for 12 months.
- Citations Under Dispute Posted
- In the spirit of transparency, CMS will display citations on the Nursing Home Care Compare website under Informal Dispute.
- The citations will not be included in the calculation of a provider’s Five Star Rating until the dispute is complete and the survey is considered final.
